From Volunteering to Trunk: A Journey Through Thai Tourism

Behind every successful travel company is a story, and Trunk Travel's tale is one of resilience, passion, and a deep connection to Thailand. It begins with a young adventurer's leap into the unknown, a move to Thailand in 2006.


Our founder's initial foray into the Thai tourism industry was as a volunteer spending three months with an independent NGO called Starfish Adventures. This experience provided invaluable insights into the intricacies of travel and the allure of the region. After volunteering across Thailand, Steve was hired to help grow that organisation, and grow it did!



However, a desire to create a more impactful and sustainable tourism model began to take root.


This drive led to the creation of The Bamboo Project, an initiative focused on community-based tourism and ethical travel. The project aimed to connect travelers with authentic Thai experiences while supporting local communities. This mission later evolved into We Are Bamboo, expanding its reach and impact.

The journey wasn't without its challenges. Building a sustainable tourism model required navigating cultural nuances, logistical hurdles, and the ever-evolving landscape of the travel industry. There were struggles to balance growth with ethical principles, and the constant need to adapt to changing traveler expectations.



Despite the successes of We Are Bamboo, the founder felt a pull towards a more personalized and curated travel experience. This desire, coupled with a vision for a travel company that truly prioritized authentic connections, led to a pivotal decision: to step away and embark on a new venture.


In 2019, Trunk Travel was born. It represented a culmination of years of experience, lessons learned, and a deep understanding of what travelers truly seek. Trunk Travel aimed to offer unique, immersive experiences that went beyond the typical tourist trail, focusing on responsible and sustainable travel.


The path from Starfish Adventures to Trunk Travel was far from linear. It was a journey marked by:

  • Adaptability: Navigating the complexities of the Thai tourism sector required constant adaptation and a willingness to learn.

  • Passion: A genuine love for Thailand and a desire to share its beauty with others fueled the founder's drive.
